ODDLIST: The best of 2012

You can all breath a sigh of relief, because OddFix is back. I knew it was time to get back into things here when I was laying in bed with my girlfriend Summer and she said, “I can’t sleep… quick, tell me more about dolphins.” Earlier that day I had been telling her some amazingly weird facts about dolphins which she apparently didn’t appreciate, even though dolphins are amazing and strange (they have pubic hair, mental). So, seeing as how OddFix began as an outlet for all the strange things I like to learn about, I knew my holiday was over. 

But before we look forward into 2013, lets take a look back at some of the weirdest posts of 2012. OddFix is barely five months old, but there are already plenty of odd bits to choose from. Below are the top ten most popular stories.

10. Helicopter cat

Ah, who could forget the “Orvillecopter”? Bart Jansen transformed his dead cat into a working remote control helicopter. This story combines two of the Internet’s favourite things: cats and weirdness.

Named after aviation pioneer Orville Wright, Jansen’s beloved cat Orville was tragically killed by a car. Jansen decided to celebrate the cat’s life by stuffing the animal and attaching small rotor blades to each of its outstretched paws. Read the full article.

9. Balls at twelve

In the early 1970′s, a group of children from a village in the Dominican Republic transformed from female to male when they hit puberty. Villagers called these children guevedoche, which translates to “balls at twelve”, which is a fairly accurate description. These children were born female. Then, with the onset of puberty, the labia changed into a scrotum, the clitoris extended into a penis, and the testes descended. Read the full article.

8. Woman breastfeeds dog

Every now and then I stumble upon a story like this that reminds me why we started OddFix to begin with. 44-year-old Californian woman Terri Graham was unable to breastfeed her two children. Feeling maternally unfulfilled, she turned to the family dog, a pug named Spider. She has been breastfeeding the dog for the last two years.

The dog supposedly developed a taste for breast milk after licking the nipple of a bottle Graham had pumped for her newborn son. Soon Graham allowed the dog to suckle the milk directly from her breast. Read the full article.

7. Man has penis removed after injecting it with olive oil

All men have thought about injecting their penis with olive oil, but few among us have… no, wait, no man has ever thought about injecting their penis with olive oil… have they?

Thailand has recently seen a rise in men over 40 being hospitalised after injected their penises with foreign substances in an attempt to make them bigger. The latest in this dangerous trend is a 50-year-old Thai man who spent years injected his penis with olive oil. When the oil developed into an infection and turned cancerous, the man needed emergency surgery to remove his genitals. Read the full article.

6. Artist takes loads of drugs, draws self

Washington D.C. artist Bryan Lewis Saunders draws self-portraits while on a variety of different substances such as cocaine, crystal meth and bath salts.

Saunders’ explains that he got the idea for his project, entitled DRUGS, “after experiencing drastic changes in my environment.” He said:

“I looked for other experiences that might profoundly affect my perception of the self. So I devised another experiment where every day I took a different drug and drew myself under the influence. Within weeks I became lethargic and suffered mild brain damage.”

5. Air Sex

Air sex is like air guitar, only instead of miming the use of a musical instrument, participants mime foreplay and sexual intercourse. Air Sex Championships have been held in over 30 cities across North America and are steadily growing in popularity. The official Air Sex World Champion website explains.

“It started as a one time parody of an Air Guitar competition in Austin. Then we quickly realized it was not only much, much bigger than Air Guitar, this was bigger than Texas.”

4. “Miss Lovely Eyes” beauty pageant

The “Miss Lovely Eyes” beauty pageant was hosted in Florida in the 1930s, and involved contestants wearing burlap sacks over their heads.

Even though “faceless” women in bathing suits seems extremely sexist by today’s standards, the pageant was thought of as progressive at the time, where contestants were judged by something other than their looks. Read the full article.

3. Stump day

It’s not surprising that a post featuring beautiful men and women was one of the most popular of 2012. The surprising thing is that all of these beautiful men and woman are amputees. Read the full article.

2. Man gets breast implants for a bet

In the summer of 1996, Brian Zembic has a conversation with a friend about breast implants. The friend, named Jobo, suggested that breast implants were dangerous and unnecessary, while Zembic agued that getting a boob job was no big deal. Their conversation escalated to the point where a wager was made. Jobo would pay Zembic the sum of $100,000 if he had breast implants and kept them for a year.

No, it’s not the plot of the latest Adam Sandler film. This actualy happened. Read the full article.

1. Man serves his own penis at a dinner party

There are many, many penis-related OddFix posts, but this was by far the most popular.

22-year-old Japanese man Mao Sugiyama, voluntarily had his genitals surgically removed. Sugiyama, who is asexual, then served his penis, testicles and scrotum to guests at a dinner party, garnished with mushrooms and parsley. Read the full article.
