Odd things, daily.
When 67-year-old Chinese man Luo Baogen and his wife refused to sell their home to the government to make way for a large highway, the government went ahead with their original plans and constructed a road that completely surrounded the house.
More than 500 families of the Xiayangzhang village in China vacated their homes after reaching a settlement with the government. But Baogen didn’t feel the compensation offered (260,000 yuan, around $41,700) was enough. Thanks to a law that passed in China in 2007, the government can not forcibly remove people from their own private property.
A four-year standoff ensued, but when it was clear Baogen had no intention to move, the government went ahead and erected the highway around the home.
