Odd things, daily.
59-year old Kenneth Douglas, a former mortuary attendant at Ohio’s Coroner’s Office, has been jailed for sexually assaulting over 100 female corpses between 1982 and 1991. The crimes went unnoticed for nearly two decades, before DNA taken from three of the victims was linked to Douglas.
Douglas claims he only committed these crimes because he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
“If I hadn’t had anything to drink when I went to work, it wouldn’t happen,” Douglas explained. “I would do crack and go in and drink and go in… I would just get on top of them and pull my pants down.”
Although DNA evidence has only linked Douglas to the sexual assault of three dead woman, he admits the true number “could have been 100.”
One of the dead women Douglas sexually assaulted was Charlene Appling, a pregnant, 24-year-old murder victim. Her father, James Appling, was devastated when he heard the news that his daughter’s body had been violated. “I thought she would be well-protected and taken care of,” Appling said. “You can’t explain the hurt, it’s like a zombie, you just have no feelings.”
If this crime wasn’t bad enough, the victim’s lawyer claims the county was given numerous warning signs but ignored them all.
Douglas’ wife claims she called the morgue supervisor several times about her husband coming home from work smelling like alcohol, death and sex.
“I told him we’re down to one car so I’m driving him to work and picking him up,” Douglas’s wife said. “He gets undressed and he wreaks of dead body sex.”
She says she was asked to stop calling, and claims to have been told, “whatever happens on county time and on county property is county business.”
