Odd things, daily.
The Vegetarian Festival is held each year during October, in Phuket, Thailand. It celebrates the Chinese community’s belief that practicing vegetarianism during the ninth lunar month will bring good health. During the celebrations, images of Chinese Gods are paraded through the streets and fireworks light the sky. But the strangest and most amazing aspect of the festival are the “Ma Song”, a group of people who perform public acts of self-torture and self-mutilation in an attempt to invoke the gods. Believing they are acting as mediums to the Chinese gods, the Ma Song (or “entranced horses”) firewalk, climb ladders made of razor blades, bath in hot oil, and puncture their bodies with knives and skewers. They believe their gods will protect them from harm.
During the 2011 festival, 74 people were injured and one death was reported.
Special thanks to Torre DeRoche for telling me about this amazing festival.
And special thanks to Jamie Monk, who took that particularly nightmare-inducing photo above featuring a man forcing banana branches through his face.
